Summary
Dendrobium moniliforme, commonly known as Shihu in Chinese and Sekkoku in Japanese, is a deciduous orchid species native to cool, montane forests and rocky areas of Japan, Korea, China, the Himalayas, and northern Indochina. It is the type species for the genus Dendrobium. This orchid typically grows on trees as an epiphyte or on rocks as a lithophyte. It reaches a modest size, with cane-like stems that can grow up to 30 cm in length. The leaves are lanceolate and appear alternately along the stem. Dendrobium moniliforme blooms in spring, producing small, white to pale pink flowers that are subtly fragrant and arranged in short racemes. The flowers are considered quite showy due to their delicate appearance and fragrance.
In cultivation, Dendrobium moniliforme is valued for its historical significance, particularly in Japan where it was used by royalty in the 17th century to perfume clothing. It is also appreciated for its ornamental flowers and ease of care when provided with the right conditions. Gardeners often grow it mounted on bark or in well-draining orchid potting mixes. It requires high humidity, cool to intermediate temperatures, and bright, indirect light. During the growing season, it benefits from regular watering and reduced watering in the winter. Common issues include root rot from overwatering and pest infestations such as scale insects. It is not known to be invasive when grown outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
