Summary
Dendromecon harfordii, commonly known as Harford’s Tree Poppy, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub of the Channel Islands and nearby areas of the California mainland. It typically reaches heights between 2–6 meters (6.6–19.7 ft) with a similar spread. Harford’s Tree Poppy has an open and somewhat irregular form, with thin branching stems that hold smooth-edged, oval-shaped, blue-green leaves 3 to 8 centimeters long. From spring to early summer, it produces showy, bright yellow flowers with four petals each 2 or 3 centimeters long, which are particularly attractive to pollinators.
This plant is valued for its drought tolerance and striking yellow flowers, which can add a splash of color to water-wise gardens. It is often used in xeriscaping, native plant gardens, and as an ornamental feature in dry, sunny areas. Harford’s Tree Poppy thrives in full sun or part shade and prefers well-drained soils. It is adapted to low water conditions once established, making it suitable for gardens with low water availability. While generally low-maintenance, it may be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
