Summary
Deschampsia cespitosa subsp. holciformis, commonly known as California Hair Grass, Tufted Hairgrass, Pacific Hairgrass, Coastal Tufted Hairgrass, or Tussock Grass, is a perennial grass native to moist meadows, forest openings, and coastal prairies of Western North America, including California and the Pacific Northwest. It typically grows to a height of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This grass forms dense clumps and has fine-textured, arching foliage. The inflorescences are airy and open, with green or cream flowers that bloom in the summer and are moderately showy. The plant is appreciated for its graceful form and movement in the breeze.
California Hair Grass is valued for its naturalistic appearance and is often used in meadow plantings, as an accent in borders, and for erosion control on slopes. It is also suitable for restoration projects and wildlife gardens, as it provides habitat for birds and insects. This grass is relatively low maintenance, tolerating a range of soil types, including clay and loam, and prefers medium drainage. While it can grow in full sun to part shade, it thrives with consistent moisture. It is not known for serious disease or pest issues, but rust and fungal leaf spots can occasionally occur. There are no popular garden cultivars of this subspecies, but the species Deschampsia cespitosa has several, such as ’Goldtau’ with golden flower heads.CC BY-SA 4.0
