Estimated Native Range
Summary
Dichelachne crinita, commonly known as Longhair Plume Grass, is a perennial grass native to a variety of habitats including coastal dunes, grasslands, and open forest communities in Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific islands. It typically grows up to 5 feet tall, with flowering panicles that are open and feathery at maturity, appearing in late spring to summer. The species was described by Linnaeus the Younger in 1781. In its native range, it plays a role in stabilizing sandy soils and supporting local biodiversity.
Longhair Plume Grass is appreciated for its ornamental value, particularly the attractive feathery panicles that can add texture to garden landscapes. It is used in naturalistic plantings, as well as in restoration projects where its ability to grow in poor soils is beneficial. This grass prefers full sun to part shade and can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. It is relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal watering once established. However, it can be susceptible to rust diseases under certain conditions. In cultivation outside its native range, care should be taken as it has the potential to become invasive.CC BY-SA 4.0
