Dieffenbachia seguine, commonly known as Dumbcane, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the New World Tropics, including South America, the Caribbean, and the Cayman Islands. It thrives in the understory of rainforests where it enjoys the dappled light and high humidity. This species typically grows to a height of 3 feet (0.91 m) to 10 feet (3.0 m) and a width of 2 feet (0.61 m) to 3 feet (0.91 m). Its striking foliage is a key feature, with large, oblong leaves that are often variegated with white, cream, or yellow patterns against a deep green background. The sap of Dieffenbachia seguine is toxic and can cause irritation upon contact, a characteristic shared with other members of the genus.

Dumbcane is valued for its lush, tropical appearance and its ability to adapt to indoor environments, making it a popular houseplant. It is also used in interior landscaping in commercial settings. While it does produce flowers, they are infrequently seen in cultivation and are not as showy as the foliage. In terms of care, Dieffenbachia seguine prefers bright, indirect light and consistently moist soil with good drainage. It is tolerant of a range of indoor conditions but will not withstand temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
