Summary
Disporum sessile, commonly known as Japanese Fairy Bells, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the understory of temperate forests in East Asia, including Japan, Korea, and parts of China. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters). This plant features arching stems with lance-shaped leaves and produces bell-shaped, yellow-green to white flowers in the spring, which are subtly showy and often hidden beneath the foliage. The flowers may be followed by black berries in the fall, which can add interest to the garden.
Japanese Fairy Bells are valued for their lush foliage and delicate flowers, making them suitable for woodland gardens, shade gardens, and as ground cover under larger plants. They are relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal care once established. In cultivation, they thrive in part shade to full shade and prefer consistently moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. While they are not typically prone to serious pest or disease problems, they can suffer from root rot if the soil is too wet. Gardeners should be aware that this plant can spread to form colonies, which can be beneficial for ground cover but may require control in small spaces.CC BY-SA 4.0
