Estimated Native Range
Summary
Disporum viridescens, commonly known as Green Fairy Bells, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the understory of temperate forests in East Asia, particularly in regions of China, Japan, and Korea. It typically grows 30 to 80 cm (12 to 31 in) tall, with stems that may branch as the plant matures. The leaves are ovate with a very short petiole, creating a lush, green backdrop for the delicate flowers. One or two bell-shaped flowers with greenish-white tepals, each 1.5 to 2 cm (0.59 to 0.79 in) long, are borne at the ends of stems. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer (May to June in the northern hemisphere), and the flowers are subtly attractive rather than showy. By late summer, the plant produces black berries around 1 cm (0.39 in) in diameter, which can add interest in a garden setting.
Green Fairy Bells are valued for their shade tolerance and the textural contrast they provide in woodland gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. They are relatively low maintenance and can be used effectively as ground cover in shady spots. These plants prefer moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and thrive in part shade to full shade conditions. While generally pest-free, they can occasionally suffer from slugs and snails. It is important to note that Disporum viridescens is not suited for full sun locations, as this can lead to leaf scorch.CC BY-SA 4.0
