Estimated Native Range
Summary
Dodonaea triquetra, commonly known as Common Hop Bush, is an evergreen shrub native to a variety of habitats including dry rainforest margins, rocky outcrops, and coastal dunes in Eastern Australia. It typically grows as an erect, multi-stemmed shrub reaching up to 3 meters in height. The leaves are lanceolate to elliptic, measuring 5 to 12 cm in length and 1 to 5 cm in width, often with a glossy appearance. In spring, the plant produces small, inconspicuous yellow flowers on panicles, followed by distinctive, winged seed capsules measuring 9 to 16 mm long, which turn reddish-brown as they mature. These capsules were historically used as a hop substitute by early Australian settlers.
Common Hop Bush is valued for its hardiness, drought tolerance, and the textural interest of its winged seed capsules. It is often used in gardens for hedging, screening, and as a windbreak due to its dense growth habit. Additionally, it is suitable for coastal plantings and urban environments because of its tolerance to salt spray and pollution. The plant thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils, although it can adapt to a range of soil types. While generally low-maintenance, it may be susceptible to scale insects and sooty mold.CC BY-SA 4.0
