Summary
Dracaena reflexa, commonly known as Song of India or Song of Jamaica, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the Indian Ocean islands of Madagascar, Mauritius, and other nearby islands, as well as Mozambique. In its natural habitat, it thrives in tropical forests and on rocky outcrops, contributing to the lush understory vegetation. Dracaena reflexa typically reaches up to 20 feet in height and is characterized by its thick, woody stems and glossy, lanceolate leaves that are dark green with yellow or light green margins, arranged in a spiral pattern. It produces clusters of small, fragrant white flowers, which are most likely to appear in midwinter when grown in optimal conditions.
This plant is appreciated for its striking variegated foliage and architectural form, making it a popular choice for indoor decoration, tropical landscaping, and as a focal point in container gardens. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal watering once established and thriving in bright, filtered light, but it can also adapt to lower light conditions. Dracaena reflexa prefers well-draining soil and can tolerate some degree of drought. It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from cold temperatures. While generally pest-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from mealybugs or scale insects.CC BY-SA 4.0
