Estimated Native Range
Summary
Drosanthemum hispidum, commonly known as Hairy Dewflower, is an evergreen subshrub native to the arid plains and rocky outcrops of Namibia and South Africa. It typically grows to a height and width of approximately 2 feet (0.6 meters), forming a dense, mat-like ground cover. The plant is characterized by its succulent, hairy leaves that help it conserve moisture, and it produces a profusion of vibrant pink and purple flowers in the spring and summer, which are highly attractive to pollinators.
Hairy Dewflower is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in hot, dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and as a ground cover in arid landscapes. It is also used in coastal gardens due to its salt tolerance. Gardeners appreciate its low maintenance requirements and its showy floral display. For optimal growth, it should be planted in well-draining soil and in a location that receives full sun. While it can tolerate medium amounts of water, overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot. It is generally pest-free but can be susceptible to fungal diseases if conditions are too wet.CC BY-SA 4.0
