Estimated Native Range
Summary
Dryopteris intermedia, commonly known as Intermediate Woodfern, is an evergreen fern native to cool, moist, shaded areas in the forests of Eastern North America. It typically grows to a height and width of 1-3 feet, forming a clump of arching, lance-shaped fronds. The sori, or spore-bearing structures, are located on the underside of the fronds and are covered by a kidney-shaped indusium, which is a characteristic feature of this genus. The Intermediate Woodfern’s evergreen foliage provides visual interest in the garden throughout the year.
Intermediate Woodfern is valued for its adaptability and ease of maintenance, making it a popular choice for natural gardens, shade gardens, and woodland plantings. It thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. While it is tolerant of a range of soil types, it does not perform well in dry or overly sunny conditions. This fern is typically used as a ground cover or as an understory plant beneath larger trees and shrubs. It is not known for aggressive spreading, which makes it a well-behaved addition to the garden.CC BY-SA 4.0
