Summary

Dryopteris wallichiana, commonly known as Alpine Woodfern, is a deciduous or semi-deciduous fern native to mountainous regions and moist, shaded forest floors across the Himalayas, China, and other parts of Southeast Asia. It can grow to a height of 90 cm (35 in), occasionally reaching 180 cm (71 in), and spreads up to 75 cm (30 in) wide. The fronds are tripinnate, giving them a finely divided, lacy appearance, and are pale green in color, which contrasts strikingly with the dark brown, almost black, stipes and rachises. This fern is known for its upright, clumping habit.

The Alpine Woodfern is valued for its lush, tropical appearance and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its ornamental qualities. It is often used in shaded garden areas, woodland plantings, and as a complement to other shade-loving perennials. It requires consistently moist soil but is relatively low-maintenance, needing only protection from strong winds and scorching sun. While it prefers part shade to full shade, it is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they are well-draining. It is generally pest-free but can be susceptible to crown rot if grown in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
