Summary

Dypsis decaryi, commonly known as the Triangle Palm, is a palm tree native to the arid, open grasslands and sandy plains of Madagascar. It is a distinctive palm with a unique, triangular crown shaft created by the arrangement of its leaves, which are about 2.5 meters (8 ft 2 in) long and grow almost upright from the trunk before arching gracefully outward. The Triangle Palm can reach up to 15 meters (49 ft) in its natural habitat, but in cultivation, it is often smaller. It produces inflorescences from the axils of the lower leaves, with yellow and green flowers that give way to round black fruit about 25 millimeters (0.98 in) in diameter. This palm is particularly showy due to its colorful flowers and fruit, and its striking form makes it a valuable ornamental plant.

The Triangle Palm is prized for its year-round blooming in suitable climates and its architectural form, making it an excellent specimen tree or accent plant. It is adaptable to a range of soil types but prefers well-drained sandy soil. While it can tolerate occasional dryness and partial shade, it thrives in full sun with low to medium water requirements. Over-watering and poor drainage can be detrimental. It is a fast grower once established, and its seeds typically germinate within a month, making seed propagation viable. Potential problems include leaf spot diseases and susceptibility to lethal yellowing disease. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant invasiveness issues.CC BY-SA 4.0
