Summary

Echeveria derenbergii, commonly known as Painted-Lady, is an evergreen succulent native to the semi-desert regions of Southwestern Mexico. It reaches a modest size of about 10 cm (4 in) in height. This plant forms a rosette of fleshy, spoon-shaped leaves that are pale green with red margins. The Painted-Lady produces racemes of bell-shaped yellow flowers with distinctive red tips, which bloom in winter, adding a splash of color during a season when few plants flower. The flowers are particularly showy and attract pollinators.

Echeveria derenbergii is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to form a dense mat of rosettes, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, succulent gardens, and as a ground cover in xeriscaped areas. It is also popular as a potted plant for its ease of care and attractive appearance. This succulent is known for rapidly producing offsets, which can be easily propagated to expand the colony or shared with other gardeners. While it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate part shade, especially in hot climates. It requires very little water and well-draining soil to prevent root rot. The Painted-Lady has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its exceptional performance in gardens. However, it is sensitive to frost and needs protection from temperatures below −7 °C (19 °F). In cooler temperate regions, it should be overwintered indoors or in a greenhouse.CC BY-SA 4.0
