Estimated Native Range
Summary
Echeveria elegans, commonly known as Mexican snowball or Mexican gem, is an evergreen succulent perennial native to rocky outcroppings and semi-desert regions in Mexico. It typically grows 2–4 inches tall and can spread up to 20 inches wide, forming compact rosettes of pale green-blue fleshy leaves that can take on a pinkish hue in cooler temperatures. The plant produces arching flower stalks in late winter to spring, bearing pink flowers with yellow tips that are quite showy and attract pollinators. Echeveria elegans is particularly noted for its drought tolerance and low maintenance requirements.
This species is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its sculptural form and the contrast between its foliage and flower colors. It is often used in rock gardens, as ground cover, in container plantings, and in succulent arrangements. Echeveria elegans thrives in well-draining soil, requires minimal water once established, and prefers full sun to partial shade. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to root rot, which is a common issue. It is also susceptible to mealybugs and aphids. Gardeners should be cautious of frost, as it is not frost-hardy. Despite these concerns, its ease of propagation and care make it a popular choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.CC BY-SA 4.0
