Estimated Native Range
Summary
Echinacea pallida, commonly known as the pale purple coneflower, is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the sunflower family Asteraceae. It is native to prairies and open woodlands of the central United States, where it thrives in well-drained soils and is adapted to periods of drought. The plant typically grows to a height of 1.5 to 2.5 ft (45 to 75 cm) and features narrow, linear, elongated, and drooping flower head rays that are pale rose-purple or nearly white, measuring 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.6 cm) long. The flowers are showy with a prominent, spiky central cone and white pollen, blooming from May into July. The fruits are cypselae, tan or bi-colored with angled edges.
Echinacea pallida is valued for its medicinal properties and is often used in gardens for its striking flowers and ability to attract pollinators. It is drought-tolerant, making it a good choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade and can adapt to a range of soil drainage conditions, from fast to slow. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to aster yellows disease, which causes deformed flowers.CC BY-SA 4.0
