Estimated Native Range
Summary
Echium virescens, commonly known as the Tower of Jewels, is a perennial herb endemic to the island of Tenerife, specifically the Macizo de Anaga and the Orotava Valley. It can reach up to 6 feet in height and is characterized by its dense rosettes of green-grey leaves and tall inflorescences of pale blue to pink flowers that bloom in the spring and early summer. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.
Echium virescens is valued for its striking vertical form and showy floral display, making it a popular choice for ornamental use in gardens and landscapes that aim to mimic Mediterranean environments. It is well-suited for xeriscaping due to its low water requirements and preference for well-drained soils. Full sun is ideal to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils. It is not known to be invasive outside its native range, but as with all non-native plantings, care should be taken to monitor its growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
