Summary
Edgeworthia chrysantha, commonly known as Oriental Paperbush, is a deciduous shrub native to woodland margins, stream banks, and forested areas in Southeastern China and Myanmar. It typically grows to a height of 2–2.5 meters and has a rounded, bushy form. The plant is noted for its clusters of small, tubular yellow flowers that bloom from late winter to early spring (February to April), providing a valuable source of color and fragrance during a time when few other plants are in flower. The bark is smooth and has been historically used in papermaking, which is reflected in its common name.
Oriental Paperbush is valued for its winter interest due to its showy, fragrant flowers and the unique structure of its bare stems, which are particularly striking in the winter landscape. It is often used in ornamental gardens for border planting and as a specimen shrub. This shrub prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun if kept adequately moist. It thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soils and requires regular watering to establish a strong root system. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to leaf spot diseases and may require protection from strong winds due to its somewhat brittle stems.CC BY-SA 4.0
