Summary

Elaeocarpus sylvestris, commonly known as Woodland Elaeocarpus, is an evergreen tree native to the temperate forests and mixed woodlands of Southeastern China, Taiwan, Japan, and Vietnam. It can reach a height of 40-60 feet (12-18 meters) and a width of 20-30 feet (6-9 meters). The tree is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves and serrated leaf margins. During the summer, it produces clusters of small, white, bell-shaped flowers that are subtly fragrant and attract pollinators. The flowers are followed by blue-black drupes that are attractive to birds.

Woodland Elaeocarpus is valued for its elegant form and the year-round interest it provides with its evergreen foliage, summer flowers, and autumn fruits. It is suitable for use as a specimen tree in large gardens and parks. This species prefers a sheltered position with full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained, acidic to neutral soils. It is relatively low maintenance but may require some pruning to maintain its shape. While generally pest and disease-free, it can be susceptible to scale insects and root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
