Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eleocharis geniculata, commonly known as bent spikerush or Canada spikesedge, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to a variety of wetland habitats including marshes, wet meadows, pond margins, and stream banks across the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, Madagascar, and some Pacific Islands. It typically grows up to 16 inches tall, featuring few straw-colored leaves and thin, erect, and often arching stems. The plant produces inflorescences of rounded spikelets that contain tiny, inconspicuous flowers. Following flowering, it develops fruit in the form of small, shiny purple-brown achenes that are attractive to waterfowl and other wildlife.
Bent spikerush is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and filter water within its native wetland environments, making it useful for ecological restoration projects and natural water treatment systems. It is also used ornamentally in water gardens and bog plantings. This species thrives in full sun to part shade and requires consistently moist to wet soil conditions. It is relatively low maintenance, but in garden settings, it may need to be managed to prevent it from spreading too aggressively.CC BY-SA 4.0
