Estimated Native Range
Summary
Emmenanthe penduliflora, commonly known as Whisperingbells, is an annual herb native to the chaparral and desert washes of the Southwestern United States, California and Baja California. It typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet and a width of 1-2 feet. Whisperingbells is characterized by its weedy-looking basal rosette of sharply lobed leaves and fleshy foliage that exudes a sticky juice with a light medicinal odor. The plant produces bell-shaped flowers with five sepals and five yellow or pinkish petals that bloom in the spring and summer. The flowers are notable for drying and becoming light and papery, which rustle in the wind, giving the plant its common name. The dried flowers encase a fruit about a centimeter wide.
Whisperingbells is valued for its drought tolerance and unique, rustling dried flowers that add auditory and visual interest to gardens. It is often used in xeriscaping, rock gardens, and naturalized areas where water conservation is a priority. This plant thrives in full sun and requires very little water, making it suitable for arid environments with well-draining soils. Gardeners should be aware that it may self-seed and spread if conditions are favorable, but it is not typically aggressive or problematic.CC BY-SA 4.0
