Estimated Native Range
Summary
Epacris impressa, commonly known as Common Heath, is an evergreen shrub native to southern Australia, including Tasmania. It is the floral emblem of Victoria and is celebrated for its vivid tubular flowers, which range in color from white to pink and red, blooming from late winter to early summer. Common Heath typically grows in open forests, heathlands, and coastal scrub, where it is a key component of the understorey vegetation. It reaches a height of 0.3 to 2 meters and a width of 0.3 to 1 meter, with small, stiff, lance-shaped leaves.
Common Heath is valued for its showy flowers and ability to attract pollinators such as birds and insects. It is often used in rockeries, as a border plant, and in native gardens to provide year-round interest. This plant prefers well-drained, acidic soils and can tolerate poor fertility. It requires consistent moisture but does not do well in waterlogged conditions. Full sun to partial shade is ideal for promoting vigorous growth and abundant flowering. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and may require protection from frost in colder climates. There are several cultivars available that offer variations in flower color and plant size.CC BY-SA 4.0
