Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eremurus robustus, commonly known as Giant Desert Candle, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to the semi-arid regions and grassy slopes of Central Asia. It is characterized by its very tall, narrow form, with a stem reaching heights of 6–10 ft (1.8–3.0 m). The leaves of Eremurus robustus are lanceolate and can vary from bright green to a bluish-green hue. Its impressive inflorescence, which can grow up to 4 ft (1.2 m) in length, is densely packed with numerous deep to pale pink or white flowers, each about 4 cm (1.6 in) across. The plant is known for its spectacular bloom of 700 to 800 flowers in June, although by the time of flowering, the leaves typically have already withered.
The Giant Desert Candle is valued for its striking vertical accent in the garden and its ability to add height and drama to borders. It is often used in large-scale perennial plantings and can be a focal point in the landscape. While it may be too tall for some garden settings, it is well-suited for open, sunny areas where its height can be appreciated. This plant requires sandy, well-drained soil and thrives in full sun. It is moderately drought-tolerant once established but benefits from medium amounts of water during the growing season. Potential problems include slug and snail damage to young growth and root rot in poorly drained soils. Eremurus robustus is not typically invasive but can self-seed if conditions are favorable.CC BY-SA 4.0
