Summary

Ericameria arborescens, commonly known as Goldenfleece, is a deciduous shrub native to chaparral and arid mountain regions of California and Oregon in the United States. This plant is adapted to ecosystems prone to wildfire and is often found in dry, open areas with well-drained soils. It can occasionally exceed 5 meters (over 17 feet) in height and is characterized by its many erect branches covered in very thin, needle-like to lance-shaped leaves that are 3-6 centimeters (1.2-2.4 inches) long. The bright golden flowers, which are actually clusters of disc florets about 5 mm (0.2 inches) wide, bloom in summer and fall and are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Goldenfleece is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. Its bright yellow flowers add a splash of color to the landscape, and the plant’s resilience makes it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. It is often used in restoration projects, as it helps stabilize soils and provides habitat for wildlife. In cultivation, it requires full sun, minimal water once established, and well-drained soils. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
