Summary

Ericameria ericoides, commonly known as California Goldenbush, is an evergreen shrub native to the coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and foothill regions of California. It typically grows to a height of up to 1 meter (3.3 ft) and is densely foliated with comblike fans of small, needle-like leaves that can reach up to a centimeter in length. The plant’s erect branches culminate in inflorescences of small, golden yellow flower heads that bloom from late summer to fall. Each flower head consists of several disc florets and a few ray florets, which are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

California Goldenbush is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. Its bright yellow flowers add a splash of color to the landscape, and the plant serves as an important food source for native wildlife. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and very low amounts of water, preferring soils with fast drainage. While it is low-maintenance, it can benefit from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and promote denser foliage.CC BY-SA 4.0
