Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eriogonum marifolium, commonly known as Marumleaf Buckwheat, is a dioecious, mat-forming sub-shrub that is native to the dry, sandy soils of alpine and subalpine zones in the Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains, extending into Oregon and Nevada. It typically forms dense patches of wavy-edged, pale green leaves and reaches heights of 4-16 inches (10-40 cm). The plant has erect, branching inflorescences that bear clusters of tiny, pale yellow staminate flowers on male plants, while female plants produce larger, bright yellow or red pistillate flowers, which can lead to the mistaken impression that they are separate species.
Marumleaf Buckwheat is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and restoration projects. It is also appreciated for its unique flowering habit, which provides visual interest and attracts pollinators. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance, preferring full sun exposure and infrequent watering once established. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. There are no widely known popular garden cultivars of this species.CC BY-SA 4.0
