Estimated Native Range
Summary
Erythrina caffra, commonly known as the Coast Coral Tree or African Coral Tree, is a medium to large deciduous tree native to coastal forests and riverine woodlands in southeastern Africa, from the Eastern Cape to KwaZulu-Natal. It can grow up to 35-60 feet (10-18 meters) in height with a spread of 25-40 feet (7.5-12 meters). The tree is characterized by its bright red, showy flowers that bloom in late winter to spring before the foliage emerges, and its distinctive green bark. The flowers are a nectar source for birds and insects, making it an ecologically beneficial species.
The Coast Coral Tree is valued for its striking floral display and is used in tropical and subtropical landscapes, often as a specimen tree or for shade in parks and large gardens. It requires full sun to light shade, moderate water, and well-drained soils. While it is relatively easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to frost damage in colder climates. In areas where it is not invasive, it can also be used for erosion control due to its extensive root system.CC BY-SA 4.0
