Summary

Erythronium revolutum, commonly known as Mahogany Fawn Lily, is a hardy perennial wildflower originating from moist, forested areas and streambanks in the Pacific Northwest, particularly in coastal regions from Northern California to British Columbia. It grows from an oval-shaped bulb 3–5 cm (1–2 in) long, producing usually two wide, flat, mottled green leaves near the ground. The plant flowers between March and June, each bulb sending up a long, naked stalk bearing one or two showy lily flowers. The stalk bows at the end, positioning the flower face downward. The six tepals exhibit shades of pink or light purple, often with yellow or white spotting near the center, creating a striking display in the spring garden.

The Mahogany Fawn Lily is valued for its attractively patterned leaves and graceful, nodding flowers that add a touch of elegance to woodland gardens and shaded borders. The best forms, often referred to as var. johnstonii, boast darker, richer pink flowers and well-marked foliage. This species thrives under deciduous trees or shrubs, where it can be planted in humus-rich, consistently moist soil. While it prefers shady conditions, it can tolerate some sun if the soil remains damp. It is important to avoid dry conditions, especially in the summer. The plant will naturalize over time through self-seeding, although seedlings may take several years to flower. Gardeners should be aware that Erythronium revolutum requires patience due to its slow propagation rate.CC BY-SA 4.0
