Summary

Eschenbachia japonica, commonly known as Japanese Aucuba, Spotted Laurel, Gold Dust Plant, or Japanese Laurel, is an evergreen shrub native to the understory of moist, dense forests and woodland margins in Eastern Asia, including Japan, Korea, and parts of China. It typically grows slowly to a height and width of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters), featuring glossy, leathery leaves that are often variegated with spots of yellow or gold, hence the name ’Gold Dust Plant’. The flowers, which appear in early spring, are small, purple to maroon, and not particularly showy, but they give way to bright red berries that are quite decorative and persist through winter on female plants, provided a male pollinator is nearby.

Eschenbachia japonica is valued for its ability to thrive in shaded conditions and for the striking variegated foliage that adds year-round interest to garden settings. It is commonly used as a foundation plant, in border planting, and as an ornamental in urban gardens. This shrub prefers part shade to full shade, medium moisture, and well-drained soils, including clay, loam, or sandy types. It is relatively low maintenance but may require protection from harsh sun and wind. While it is disease-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from leaf spot or root rot if conditions are too wet. Eschenbachia japonica is potentially invasive in some regions, so gardeners should consult local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
