Estimated Native Range
Summary
Etlingera elatior, commonly known as Torch Ginger or Red Ginger Lily, is an herbaceous perennial native to the moist, shaded rainforests of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and New Guinea. It can grow up to 13 feet (4 meters) tall, with long, leathery leaves and striking, showy pink to red inflorescences that resemble torches, hence the common name. The flowering season extends throughout the year in its native tropical climate, and the flowers are particularly noted for their size and vibrant coloration. The plant also produces a fruit that is encapsulated in a showy, red, waxy structure.
Torch Ginger is valued for its ornamental beauty and is often used in tropical-themed gardens and as a striking focal point in floral arrangements. It is also cultivated for its culinary applications; the flower buds are a key ingredient in Southeast Asian cuisine, featuring prominently in dishes such as the Malaysian specialty, asam laksa. In cultivation, Torch Ginger requires consistently moist soil, partial to full shade, and protection from strong winds. It is not tolerant of frost and prefers a humid environment. While it is generally free of serious pests and diseases, root rot can occur if the soil is not well-draining.CC BY-SA 4.0
