Summary
Eucalyptus curtisii, commonly known as Plunkett Mallee, is an evergreen tree native to the open woodlands and forest margins of Queensland, Australia. This species is particularly adapted to dry, rocky, and sandy soils, often found in hilly or mountainous terrain. Plunkett Mallee typically grows to a height of 7–12 m (23–39 ft) and is characterized by its smooth grey to silvery bark that peels away in short curly flakes, revealing a shiny surface underneath. The adult leaves are lance-shaped, narrow elliptic, or curved, providing a distinctive texture to the foliage.
Plunkett Mallee is notable for its ornamental value, with white to creamy white flowers that bloom from September to December, offering a showy display. The flowers are followed by distinctive wrinkled, cup-shaped fruit capsules that add interest to the plant year-round. This species is drought-tolerant and suitable for xeriscaping, making it a valuable addition to water-wise gardens. It is also used for habitat restoration and as a windbreak due to its hardy nature. Plunkett Mallee thrives in full sun and requires soils with good drainage, tolerating both low and medium water conditions. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to eucalyptus gall wasp and other pests common to Eucalyptus species.CC BY-SA 4.0
