Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eucalyptus deglupta, commonly known as Rainbow Eucalyptus or Mindanao Gum, is an evergreen tree native to tropical rainforests with high humidity in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. It is renowned for its rapid growth, reaching heights of 60–75 m (197–246 ft) and trunk diameters up to 240 cm (94 in). The tree features prominent buttresses up to 4 m (13 ft) high, which stabilize the tall structure. Its most striking feature is the multicolored bark that peels away in strips to reveal a bright, ever-changing tapestry of smooth bark in shades of green, blue, purple, orange, and maroon. The small, spherical flower buds lead to white and pale yellow stamens that are not particularly showy. Flowering occurs sporadically throughout the year in its native habitat.
The Rainbow Eucalyptus is valued for its dramatic bark and is often used as a focal point in tropical landscapes. It requires a consistently moist, rich soil and full sun to thrive, making it suitable for large-scale plantings in parks and gardens in frost-free regions. It is also used for reforestation projects in tropical areas due to its fast growth. However, it can be invasive outside its native range and is susceptible to frost damage. It is not drought-tolerant and requires ample water to maintain its health.CC BY-SA 4.0
