Summary
Eucalyptus erythronema, commonly known as the Red-flowered Mallee, is a species of mallee or small tree endemic to the semi-arid regions and mallee woodlands of Western Australia. It is a striking plant that typically grows to a height of 2–6 m (6 ft 7 in – 19 ft 8 in) and is notable for its smooth, pinkish-brown to dark red bark, which is shed in strips to reveal a powdery, creamy white new bark underneath. The Red-flowered Mallee is characterized by its pendulous flower buds, which are mostly arranged in groups of three, and its vibrant red, pink, or creamy white flowers. The conical fruit that follows is also of interest. Flowering occurs from July to December, or from January to February, and the flowers are particularly showy, attracting various pollinators.
This species is valued for its moderate growth rate, drought resistance, and ornamental appeal, with its bright flowers making it a popular choice for ornamental plantings and as a screening plant in gardens and landscapes. It is also used for honey production and products rich in tannin. Eucalyptus erythronema thrives in full sun and can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they have medium drainage. It is sold commercially in seed form or as tube stock. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to leaf spot and other fungal diseases under certain conditions. Gardeners should be aware that Eucalyptus species can become invasive when grown outside their native range and should be planted with care.CC BY-SA 4.0
