Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eucalyptus grandis, commonly known as Flooded Gum or Rose Gum, is a fast-growing, evergreen tree native to the coastal areas and sub-coastal ranges of eastern Australia, from the vicinity of Newcastle in New South Wales northwards into Queensland. It thrives in wet sclerophyll forests and rainforest margins. Typically, it reaches a height of 50 meters (160 feet), with the largest specimens exceeding 80 meters (260 feet) in height. The tree has a straight trunk with smooth, powdery bark that is grey to grey-brown and sheds in long ribbons. Its white flowers bloom in the fall and are relatively inconspicuous compared to the lush, green foliage.
Flooded Gum is valued for its rapid growth, tall and straight form, and its ability to stabilize soil, making it suitable for riverbank stabilization projects. It is also used for timber production due to its fast growth and straight grain. In cultivation, it requires full sun and can adapt to a range of soil types, from fast to slow drainage. While it is too large for most private gardens, it is an attractive option for large parks, farms, and as a windbreak in rural landscapes. Care should be taken as Eucalyptus grandis can become invasive outside its native range, and it is important to consult local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
