Summary

Eucalyptus loxophleba, commonly known as York Gum, is an evergreen tree or mallee that is endemic to the semi-arid regions of Southwestern Australia, particularly the wheatbelt area. It typically grows to a height of 5 to 15 meters (16 to 49 ft) and can form a lignotuber, which allows it to resprout after fire or other damage. The York Gum has rough, fibrous bark on the lower trunk and smooth, olive to brownish bark on the upper trunk and branches. Its adult leaves are lance-shaped with a distinct bluish-green color. Flower buds are presented in groups of seven to eleven, leading to showy white flowers. The fruit is a woody, conical capsule that adds to the tree’s ornamental value.

York Gum is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it suitable for xeriscaping and as a windbreak in arid landscapes. It is also used for reforestation and habitat restoration projects. The tree’s white flowers are attractive to bees and are a source of nectar for honey production. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and well-drained soils, with low water needs once established. York Gum can be susceptible to leaf spot and other fungal diseases in humid environments. It is not commonly cultivated outside of Australia, but where it is, care should be taken as it can become invasive in some Mediterranean climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
