Summary
Eucalyptus neglecta, commonly known as Omeo gum, is a small tree native to the montane woodlands, bogs, and riparian zones of the high country of Victoria, Australia. It is a hardy species that adapts well to cold climates, often found in alpine and sub-alpine regions. This eucalypt typically grows to a height of 6–7 m (20–23 ft) and is characterized by its rough, fibrous bark on the lower trunk, with smooth grey to brownish bark higher up. The crown features lance-shaped, egg-shaped, or oblong leaves arranged in opposite pairs. From November to February, it produces clusters of white flowers in groups of seven to fifteen, followed by distinctive cup-shaped or conical fruit.
Omeo gum is valued for its resilience to cold temperatures and drought, making it suitable for cultivation in a variety of landscapes, including urban environments, as a specimen tree or for windbreaks. It requires full sun to part shade and can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they have adequate drainage. While it is drought-tolerant, occasional watering during prolonged dry periods can benefit the tree. It is relatively low-maintenance and can be a good choice for gardeners seeking an attractive, easy-to-care-for tree.CC BY-SA 4.0
