Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eucalyptus populnea, commonly known as Poplar Box, Bimble Box, or Bimbil Box, is a deciduous tree native to the woodlands and grassy woodlands of eastern Australia, particularly in Queensland and New South Wales. It typically grows to a height of 20 meters (66 feet) and is notable for forming a lignotuber, which allows it to resprout after fire or other damage. The bark on the trunk and larger branches is rough, fibrous, or flaky and greyish in color, while the thinner branches have smooth grey bark that sheds in short ribbons. Flowering occurs from August to December, with the tree producing white flowers that are not particularly showy but are attractive to a variety of wildlife, especially bees.
The Poplar Box is valued for its adaptability to a range of soil types, including those with slow or medium drainage. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping and low-water-use gardens. This species is often used in reforestation projects, as windbreaks, and for timber production due to its hardy nature. In cultivation, it requires full sun and can tolerate medium amounts of water. Gardeners should be aware that Eucalyptus species can have aggressive root systems that may interfere with buildings and infrastructure.CC BY-SA 4.0
