Summary

Eucalyptus torquata, commonly known as Coral Gum, is an evergreen tree originating from the semi-arid regions and woodlands of Western Australia. It is a small to medium-sized tree, typically reaching heights of 4 to 11 meters (13 to 36 ft) with a spreading canopy. Coral Gum is notable for its rough, persistent bark on both the trunk and branches, and its striking flowers. The flowers are barrel-shaped buds with horned caps, blooming prolifically in shades of red, pink, and occasionally white or cream, from August to December. The blooms are arranged in simple axillary clusters with three to seven flowers on straight peduncles. The buds are rostrate or urceolate and shed their calyx calyptrate early in the season. Following the flowering period, cylindrical fruits develop with a depressed disc and enclosed valves.

Coral Gum is valued for its drought tolerance and vibrant flowers, making it a popular choice for small gardens, ornamental planting, and street trees in arid regions. It is known to flower within two years from seed, which is relatively quick for a tree. The species adapts well to cultivation in large containers and prefers well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires low to medium amounts of water, with a preference for soils that offer medium to fast drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
