Summary
Eucephalus glaucescens, commonly known as Klickitat aster, is a perennial herb native to the Pacific Northwest, specifically found in open woodlands and meadows at mid to high elevations. This species is part of the Asteraceae family and is characterized by its woody caudex and a height that can reach up to 160 cm (5+1⁄3 ft). The stems of Eucephalus glaucescens are hairless, and its leaves have a distinctive whitish, waxy coating that contributes to its drought resistance. From late summer to early fall, it produces an impressive display of flower heads, each with 8-13 purple ray florets encircling numerous yellow disc florets, which are highly attractive to pollinators.
The Klickitat aster is valued for its late-season blooms and its ability to thrive in challenging conditions. It is often used in native plant gardens, restoration projects, and as a border plant in cultivated landscapes. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate partial shade and requires soils with good drainage. This plant is relatively low maintenance but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. It is not commonly affected by serious pests or diseases, making it a resilient choice for gardeners.CC BY-SA 4.0
