Estimated Native Range
Summary
Euclea natalensis, commonly known as Natal guarri, is a dioecious shrub or small tree native to a variety of habitats including coastal forests, bushveld, and savannas across the southern half of Africa. It typically grows to a height of 2-6 meters and can spread 2-4 meters wide. Natal guarri is characterized by its dense, rounded to spreading form, and its dark green, hirsute, leathery leaves which are arranged oppositely. The small, inconspicuous flowers are greenish-white and bloom from September to November, followed by spherical, fleshy fruit that ripens to a black or purple color from October to June, providing a food source for birds and other wildlife.
Natal guarri is valued for its hardiness and drought tolerance, making it suitable for xeriscaping and as a windbreak in arid regions. It is also used for screening and as a hedge in residential and commercial landscapes. This species thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, tolerating a range of soil types from sandy to loamy. While generally low-maintenance, it may be susceptible to scale insects and sooty mold. Natal guarri is also utilized for its wood and medicinal properties, and the fruit is edible, though not widely consumed.CC BY-SA 4.0
