Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eucomis pole-evansii, commonly known as Pineapple Lily, is an evergreen perennial bulb native to grasslands and open spaces in Southern Africa. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) with a distinctive flower spike resembling a pineapple, hence its common name. The flower spike is composed of white to greenish flowers arranged in a dense raceme, topped by a crown of green leaflike bracts. The blooming period occurs in summer, with the plant remaining in flower for about two months. The Pineapple Lily’s foliage is strappy and lush, adding to its ornamental value.
The Pineapple Lily is celebrated for its unique flower spikes and is often used in borders, container gardens, and as a focal point in ornamental beds. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its beauty and performance in gardens. While not frost-hardy, it can be grown in colder climates with winter protection or overwintered indoors in containers. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils with moderate moisture. Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to bulb rot. Eucomis pole-evansii is relatively pest-free but can occasionally suffer from slugs and snails. It is not known to be invasive outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
