Estimated Native Range
Summary
Euonymus oxyphyllus, commonly known as Korean Spindle Tree, is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to a variety of habitats including forest edges, open woodlands, and mountainous regions in central and eastern China, Manchuria, Korea, Japan, and the Kuril Islands. It typically reaches a height of 8 feet (2.4 meters) and is noted for its distinctive, broad-elliptic leaves which turn a vibrant red-purple in the fall. The Korean Spindle Tree blooms in late spring to early summer, producing inconspicuous greenish-white flowers that are followed by pink fruits with bright orange seeds, which are particularly ornamental in autumn.
The Korean Spindle Tree is valued for its compact size, making it suitable for smaller gardens. It is often used for its ornamental berries and striking fall foliage. In cultivation, it prefers well-drained soil, tolerates partial shade to full sun, and requires moderate watering. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it can be affected by pests such as scale insects and diseases like powdery mildew. It is not commonly known to have aggressive roots or to be invasive. This species can be propagated by seed or cuttings, and no popular cultivars are noted.CC BY-SA 4.0
