Summary

Euonymus sachalinensis, commonly known as Flat-Stalked Spindle, is a deciduous shrub native to the understory of cool-temperate forests in Japan, Korea, and the Russian Far East. It typically grows to 2.5 m (8.2 ft) tall and broad, but exceptional specimens, such as the one in the Hørsholm Arboretum at Copenhagen University, can reach up to 4 m (13 ft) in height. The plant has a bushy habit with green leaves that turn a striking red in autumn. Its red fruit is particularly ornamental, splitting open to reveal bright orange seeds that add interest to the winter garden.

Flat-Stalked Spindle is valued for its vibrant fall foliage and decorative fruit, making it a popular choice for ornamental use in residential gardens and public landscapes. It is also appreciated for its adaptability to different light conditions and its relatively low water requirements. The cultivar ’Sancho’ is noted for being more free-flowering than its parent and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. This shrub is best grown in full sun to part shade and prefers soils with medium drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to scale insects and euonymus caterpillars, which may require management.CC BY-SA 4.0
