Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eupatorium serotinum, commonly known as Late Boneset, is a deciduous perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, prairies, and scrub areas in the Central and Eastern USA, as well as Northeastern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of one to two meters (40-80 inches) and is characterized by its upright, clump-forming habit. The plant produces clusters of tiny white flower heads from late summer to fall, each with 9–15 disc florets but lacking ray florets, which are modest in showiness but attract a variety of pollinators.
Late Boneset is valued for its late-season blooms, which provide nectar for butterflies and other insects when few other plants are flowering. It is often used in naturalized plantings, wildflower gardens, and as a border plant in cultivated gardens. This species is adaptable to a range of soil conditions but prefers medium moisture and good drainage. It thrives in full sun to part shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew and rust, especially in humid conditions. Late Boneset can spread by rhizomes and self-seeding, potentially becoming aggressive in garden settings if not managed.CC BY-SA 4.0
