Euphorbia virgata, commonly known as leafy spurge or wolf’s milk, is a perennial herb native to Europe and Asia. It has been introduced to North America, where it is considered invasive. This species is often found in a variety of habitats including grasslands, open woodlands, and along roadsides. In its native range, it typically occupies disturbed sites, pastures, and fields, often in dry, well-drained soils. Euphorbia virgata can grow up to 3 feet (1 meter) in height and is characterized by its upright form, small yellow-green flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer, and showy, heart-shaped bracts that add to its ornamental value. The plant contains a milky latex that can be an irritant to the skin and eyes.

Leafy spurge is known for its ability to spread rapidly and form dense colonies, which can displace native vegetation and reduce biodiversity. Despite its invasive nature, it is sometimes used for ornamental purposes due to its unique appearance and drought tolerance. It requires minimal maintenance once established and can thrive in full sun to part shade, in a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. However, gardeners should be cautious as it can become problematic if not managed properly.
