Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eupomatia laurina, commonly known as Bolwarra, is an evergreen shrub to small tree native to the rainforests and humid, shaded understory of eastern Australia and New Guinea. It typically grows to a height of 3-15 feet (1-5 meters) but can occasionally reach up to 49 feet (15 meters) in its ideal habitat. Bolwarra has a dense, bushy habit with glossy, ovate to elliptic leaves that are dark green above and paler beneath. It produces small, cream to yellow, cup-shaped flowers from late winter to early spring, which are followed by edible, green to yellow, aromatic fruit resembling guavas.
Bolwarra is valued for its attractive foliage and sweet fruit, which is used in cooking and beverages. It is often cultivated in gardens for its ornamental qualities and as a food plant. In cultivation, it requires well-drained, fertile soil, consistent moisture, and protection from direct sunlight and frost. It is suitable for shaded areas, making it a good choice for understory planting in tropical and subtropical gardens. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and may require protection from frost in cooler climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
