Estimated Native Range
Summary
Euptelea polyandra, commonly known as the Japanese euptelea, is a deciduous small tree or multi-stemmed shrub native to the moist woodland areas and along streams in central and southern Japan. It typically grows to a height of 10-20 feet (3-6 meters) with a similar spread. The plant features alternately arranged leaves that are broadly ovate with finely toothed margins and a pale green color. During the spring, Euptelea polyandra produces small, inconspicuous, greenish-white flowers that are not particularly showy but have a unique charm. The flowers are followed by winged fruits that are more noticeable and add to the plant’s ornamental value.
The Japanese euptelea is valued for its graceful, arching branches and the textural quality of its foliage, which turns yellow in the fall before dropping. It is occasionally used as a street tree in European cities due to its adaptability and moderate size. In cultivation, it prefers moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to partial shade. While it is not commonly found in the nursery trade, it can be a unique addition to woodland gardens, naturalized areas, or as a specimen plant in residential landscapes. It is generally free from serious pests and diseases, but it may require extra water during dry periods.CC BY-SA 4.0
