Summary
Eustoma exaltatum, commonly known as Seaside Gentian, is an annual or perennial herb. It is native to coastal prairies, salt marshes, and dunes in the south and central United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of up to 0.7 feet (0.2 meters). The plant is characterized by its upright, clump-forming habit and its large, showy, purple, bell-shaped flowers that bloom profusely from late spring through summer, adding a splash of color to the garden.
Seaside Gentian is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to thrive in coastal conditions that can be challenging for other plants. It is often used in wildflower gardens, borders, and as a container plant. In cultivation, it prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, and it requires medium amounts of water with well-drained soils. While it is adaptable to various soil types, it does particularly well in sandy or loamy soils. Seaside Gentian is not known for significant disease or pest problems, but it can be sensitive to overwatering which may lead to root rot.
