Estimated Native Range
Summary
Eutrochium dubium, commonly known as Coastal Plain Joe Pye Weed, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the moist meadows, marshes, and riverbanks of the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. It typically grows to a height of 60-170 cm (24-68 inches or 2-5 2/3 feet) tall. This plant is characterized by its sturdy, upright stems and whorled leaves, with flower heads grouped in flat-topped clusters. Each head contains 4-10 dark purple disc florets, occasionally pink or white, blooming from late summer to early fall. While the flowers lack ray florets, they are notably attractive to pollinators such as butterflies and birds.
Coastal Plain Joe Pye Weed is valued for its tall stature and showy flower clusters, which add vertical interest and a splash of color to garden borders and naturalized areas. It is also used for rain gardens due to its tolerance for moist conditions. This plant thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers consistently moist soil with good drainage. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, from clay to loam. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in overly humid conditions. To encourage bushier growth and potentially a second bloom, gardeners may cut plants back by a third after initial flowering.CC BY-SA 4.0
