Estimated Native Range
Summary
Exbucklandia populnea, commonly known as Malayan Aspen, is an evergreen tree native to the montane forests and moist, subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, including the Himalayas. It typically grows to a height of 21-60 feet (6-18 meters) and a width of 15-30 feet (5-9 meters), featuring a conical to rounded canopy. The tree is characterized by its smooth, pale bark and glossy, ovate leaves that resemble those of the aspen, hence the common name. It produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by woody capsules containing numerous seeds.
Malayan Aspen is appreciated for its attractive foliage and its adaptability to a range of soil types, though it prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils. It is suitable for tropical and subtropical gardens, where it can be used as a shade tree or ornamental specimen. In cultivation, it requires protection from strong winds and benefits from mulching to maintain soil moisture. While it is not commonly found in cultivation outside its native range, it can be a unique addition to collections of tropical plants. Care should be taken to provide adequate water, especially in drier climates. There are no major disease or pest issues reported, but it may not tolerate prolonged drought or frost.CC BY-SA 4.0
